Giveaway of The Betsy-Tacy Treasury

The recently released The Betsy-Tacy Treasury includes the first four books of the Betsy-Tacy series, conveniently bound together in one volume. It is available in both a softcover edition and an e-book. Just a reminder: if you order it through Amazon or Barnes & Noble, be sure to click through the links on the Betsy-Tacy Convention website to help support the Betsy-Tacy Society!

The New York Times featured a wonderful write-up about this new edition, and the enduring charm of the series in general. Be sure to check it out!

Also, throughout these coming weeks, remember to visit the sites that will be part of the blog tour for this book. Sarah has a list here.

Harper Perennial sent me a free copy to review and I can assure you that this edition is just beautiful! There is also a new biography in the back of the book featuring illustrator Lois Lenski. I am delighted to add this volume to my book shelf.

If you haven't gotten around to ordering your copy yet, you are in luck; thanks to Harper, I have an extra copy to give to one lucky reader!

To be eligible for this contest you must:
  • Not already own the Treasury
  • Be a resident of the contiguous United States
There are two ways you can enter:
  1. (Mandatory) Leave a comment with a suggestion or topic idea (Betsy-Tacy related, of course!) of what you would like me to post more of on this blog. Do you enjoy learning about the famous people mentioned in the books? The fashion? The places? Popular music? Quotes? Characters? Whatever it is, let me know! You can also leave any suggestions you have to improve the site.

  2. For an extra entry, you can tweet this giveaway. Just be sure to come back and leave a comment saying you did so.
This giveaway will run until Tuesday, November 22, 2011. I will come back then and update this post with the randomly-chosen winner. I will also privately contact the lucky person, so please be sure to include an e-mail address. Giveaway has ended.

Thank you to Harper Perennial for providing these copies, and for republishing this wonderful series! (Disclaimer: I was not paid to host this giveaway. I think you all know that I love this series, so my positive accolades are genuine!)

  1. Oh, I can't wait for this...if I don't win it, I hope for Christmas...or I will have to treat myself.

My idea for a blog post would be how to introduce it to my daughter...she is 5. For her 5th birthday she got Betsy-Tacy. However, do I give her one a year for the next X years...or let her just indulge and enjoy?

  5. I am doing Betsy's Great World as a girls' club in the Spring ... any suggestions for crafts we could do which would be the right period and that Betsy herslef may have done?

  6. When I was working on my "history" post, I was very curious about the girls "charging" pins as an admittance fee. What exactly is a pin? Same thing we would think of? (Sorry if you've mentioned this already! Until I've read all the books, I've just kind of glanced over the posts on here, so I don't end up on a spoiler).

  8. I'd love more about the fashions - and the hairstyles. How do you make a pompadour? Where did a rat get its name? How do you do puffs?

  9. I love seeing photos of the wildflowers and actual locations mentioned in the books. A fun post would be photos of Christmas tree ornaments available in that era. I tweeted! I'm @jeanniemaries on Twitter.

  11. I have especially enjoyed your articles on the shirtwaist (and the S-curve corset) and the Carnegie libraries. I'd like to know more about how the hairstyles of the period(s) were achieved. I'm delighted to hear about the new book; I found your site through the NY Times article.

  12. Plus the Cat Duet post was perfect! I'd like to learn about the "droop". I'd alos be interested in the role of religion in society. Lovelace shares much through Betsy and Julia's switch of churches.

  13. I've always wished the high school and beyond BT books would be made into movies or some sort of mini-series. So, I think it would be fun if you did a post where you picked out actresses/actors (modern day or older) to play different characters in the books! The rest of us could leave comments with our suggestions/opinions as well! The first one could be young Ryan Gosling as Herbert! =)

  14. Here's an idea: were the newspaper that Joe worked for fiction or real newspapers of the day. And I'd like to know more about Butternut Center.

  15. Safety pins didn't even cross my mind! :) I was thinking decorative pins women wore or club pins, and I wondered how on earth the children were able to get that many. Safety pins definitely makes sense!!

  16. Pompadours. 1). Why are they mentioned so frequently in the Betsy/Tacy series? 2). Why is that word so hard to say? 3). What were they exactly? How can both men and women have pompadours? Why is Joe Willard's pompadour so fabulous? What makes a pompadour more special than regular hair? It is mentioned so much in the books, I am quite perplexed. I'd love a little ditty all about pompadours with perhaps a picture or two.

  17. I love this comment so much! Pompadours were probably my biggest question when I was little and first reading the books. You perfectly voiced all of my queries! I will definitely research and post about this. :D

  18. I would love, love, love to read more about the clothing and hairstyles that are mentioned so frequently. Historical fashion is a passion for me, and I would love to delve into the Betsy-Tacy ones more. It would also be fun to read some posts on Murmuring Lake.

  19. I'm a fashion history nerd, so more about the clothing would be super fun & interesting to me! I bought the Betsy-Tacy high school books this summer so I would LOVE to have the matching treasury to complete the set. :)
